Army Starts Off Season With Win At Maine
August 30, 2019 | Men's Cross Country
BANGOR, Maine - The two-time defending Patriot League champion Army West Point men's cross country team kicked-off its 2019 season with a victory in its dual meet vs. Maine on Friday.
The Black Knights were paced by freshmen Garrett Gough and Matthew Porter who took the top two spots in the meet. Sophomore Bradley Pease placed third.
It marks the second consecutive season in which the race was won by a freshman, as Marshall Beatty took the top spot in the 2018 event.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"We had some nice competitive efforts out there today and I thought we managed both the race and the conditions quite well. It was a sloppy mess and the terrain was a real challenge of turns and ups and downs.
We have trained at a high level with the upperclassmen for several weeks now, but the plebes have largely been allowed to adapt to collegiate work. They went into this pretty rested, so It didn't surprise me to see two plebes pushing at the front. I was a little surprised that they held the lead all the way to the line. There is a lot of talent in our underclass guys, but they have been held back by the strength of our varsity guys, so today was a nice time for them to step up and own the responsibility to lead from the front.
Garrett and Matthew did a nice job of working together and Bradley showed some real spirit in coming from behind. I am really pleased with the way they all worked together and the competitive spirit that we saw. It was a strong showing.
The guys know that this is just a step toward much bigger goals and objectives, but it was definitely a step in the right direction. Now we have a nice training block ahead of us and a lot of challenges the rest of this fall. I am excited to see what we can do"
TOP FINISHERS:
1. Garrett Gough - 20:21.6
2. Matthew Porter - 20:25.7
3. Bradley Pease - 20:31.6
5. Luca Mazzanti - 20:50.4
6. Alex Tosi - 21:03.4
UP NEXT: The Black Knights host the Army Open in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. on Sept. 13.
