Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List
Â
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior defensive back Elijah Riley was selected to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, which is presented annually to the best defensive player in college football.
Â
Riley became a key leader in Army's secondary a year ago. He finished third on the team with 55 tackles to go along with 39 solo grabs. The Port Jefferson, N.Y., native chipped in 7.5 tackles for a loss of 27 yards and 10 pass breakups.
"Elijah has been a key player for us since day one," head coach Jeff Monken said. "He consistently shuts down his side of the field when he battles against our opponent's top talent. He has also helped our secondary rank 21st and 14th in the nation against the pass over the last two years. I'm excited to see him lead our defense in his final season."
Â
He was named to the 2018 All-Independent First Team and was chosen as a team captain by his teammates following spring practice. Riley has accumulated 122 total tackles, including 87 unassisted ones.
Â
The Black Knights kick off their season Aug. 30 when they host Rice at Michie Stadium at 6 p.m. Army will be looking to start the season off right with its 14th straight home victory.
