COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"Mike and August have been two of our most consistent performers all spring. Now they get a chance to test themselves against some of the best young talent in the United States and, in some events, the best talent in the world.
There are athletes in this meet that will compete for their countries this year at the World Championships and next year in Tokyo at the Olympic Games. Some of those athletes will win medals. This meet is that good.Â
There are 24 competitors in each event and 9 will advance to the final after the first three throws. Mike and August have repeatedly shown that they can compete against this level of competition. They are both seeded in the back half of the field based on the qualifying from the regional meets, so they have their work cut out for them to advance to the final. But head-to-head competition has a way of leveling the playing field.Â
If they continue to compete the way they did all spring, they will have a shot to improve upon their seeding and possibly make the final. That is what we would like to see from them."
