May 08, 2019 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Patriot League announced Wednesday that seven members of the Army West Point track and field program have received academic honors for the 2019 outdoor track and field season.Â
Headlining those awards with the league's highest academic honor is junior Lynne Mooradian, who was named Patriot League Women's outdoor track Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Hanover, Pa., native has been no stranger to academic accolades during her tenure at West Point, as she has now claimed the honor in three consecutive seasons after winning the award for the 2019 indoor track and field season and the 2018 outdoor track and field season.
"Lynne is one of our stars and I mean that in the most descriptive way," head coach Mike Smith said. "She is brilliant. What she does on a daily basis and how she does it is remarkable."
The Mechanical Engineering major carries a 4.21 grade-point average. Following the 2018 season, she received national recognition by being named Google Cloud Academic All-America of the Year. At last week's Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Mooradian medaled twice, earning gold in the 4x100 meter relay and bronze in the 4x400 meter relay. She also earned her fourth Academic All-Patriot League selection.Â
"She is a leader on campus and in our program," Smith said. "She is a scholar, she is a winner, she is a record holder, she is selfless and she is a competitor. As good as she is at all of those tangible things, she is an even better person. We are lucky to have her."Â
In addition to Mooradian, six Black Knights received Academic All-Patriot League honors for their performances in the classroom and in competition.Â
From the men's track and field team, senior Kenneth Brinson, juniors Ben Petrella and Jackson Sullivan and sophomore Geoff Kirk were selected to the ten-member team. Â
Brinson was the 2017 Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and has received several academic achievements as a two-sport athlete at West Point. The Kennesaw, Ga., native has received CoSida Academic All-American honors for both track and field and football during his career. In 2018, he was a finalist for college football's highest academic honor, the Campbell Trophy.
Petrella is a two-time Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year, winning the award in both cross country and outdoor track and field in 2018. The Physics major carries a 4.01 GPA.
This marks the third consecutive recognition for Sullivan, as he received the honor for outdoor track and field in 2018 and indoor track and field in 2019. The Nuclear Engineering major carries a 3.66 GPA and won two silver medals at the outdoor league championships.
Kirk claimed his first academic all-league honor after an impressive second year on the banks of the Hudson. The Avon, Conn., native carries a 3.51 GPA and claimed silver in the shot put and bronze in the discus throw at the league championships. Kirk broke the program's shot put record this season with a 17.82 meter throw at the Army-Navy Star Meet.Â
Senior Cassie Mundekis and junior Haley Watson joined Mooradian from the women's track and field team.Â
All three claimed Academic All-Patriot League recognition for the second consecutive season after each of them achieved the honor for the 2019 indoor campaign. Mundekis and Watson combined to take gold at the Patriot League Championships in the 4x800 meter relay. Mundekis, an English major, carries a 3.82 GPA. This marks her third selection to the academic all-league team. Watson receives the honor for the second time in her career, holding a 3.65 GPA with an American Politics major.Â
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
