McMullen Shines At Patriot League Championships
May 04, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
WORCESTER, Mass. - Highlighted by a three gold medal winning performance by Calli McMullen, the Army West Point women's track and field team placed second at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships.
McMullen crossed the line first in the 4x100 meter relay before setting program record in the 100 meter dash. McMullen then won the 200 meter dash and set a program record with her split in the 4x400 meter relay. This marked her third program record of the weekend after she set an Academy and meet record with her 200 meter preliminary victory on Friday. McMullen was the meet's top point scorer and was named Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Meet.
Abby Halbrook closed out her final Patriot League Championship appearance with a victory in the 1500m run. Freshman Emily Mikoud earned a victory in her first outdoor championship, taking gold in the shot put. Mikoud was named Patriot League Women's Rookie of the Meet.
The result is the team's best at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships since 2008.

"We knew coming into the meet this weekend that we had almost no margin for error if we were going to win the title. We were good out there today and in some events we were dominating, but we just didn't have enough bodies to get it done.
Calli McMullen was the class of the meet. I have run out of superlatives to describe her. She broke her own school record in the 200 prelims which was also the meet record. She followed that up by anchoring our 4x100 to the win. Then she won the 100 and broke her own school record in that event. Then she won the 200. And after all of that, she split 53.55 on our 4x400 relay that broke yet another school record. She keeps getting better and better. It is really something to watch her out there. It's not just the fast times that are impressive, it is her competitive fire that is awesome to watch. I watched the 4x100 from the backstretch and it looked like she was shot out of a rocket the way she ran people down on that anchor leg.
Abby Halbrook closed out her Patriot League career with one final win in the 1500. There was no doubt how that race was going to end. She controlled the entire race and then looked like a sprinter in the last 100m.
I thought Emily Mikoud was pretty special as well this weekend. She has made herself into a very competitive young thrower. She competed well in the hammer and the discus and then really put it together in the shot put to claim that title. She has a very bright future.
Ultimately, we came here to win the title and we didn't do that. I am disappointed that I could not get our graduating firsties a championship. The women's team is more competitive now than when those firsties arrived, so I suppose that is one positive takeaway. But in the end, we have to get better if we want to win."
