Army Drops High-Scoring Affair to Columbia

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team fell, 15-12, here Wednesday night to Columbia in a midweek contest.
For the second-straight game the Black Knights controlled much of the matchup but this time weren't able to hold on for the win. The Lions outscored their host 9-1over the last three innings to turn an 11-6 deficit into a 15-12 victory. Five of those runs came in the top of the ninth alone.
Despite the loss, there were some highlights from the game for the Cadets. Anthony Giachin and John McKenna both finished with three hits each, while Andre Walden chipped in two. Giachin and McKenna led the team with three runs batted in to go along with their one run apiece. Walden and Jacob Hurtubise touched home three and two times, respectively, as well.
Harry Flannery Jr. was tagged with the loss after giving up four hits and five runs, four earned, over 1.2 innings.Â
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Hurtubise drew one walk in Wednesday contest to tie Zach Price's Academy record for walks in a career (125), achieved from 2009-12.
- The junior also swiped one base to pull him within five of breaking the Patriot League career stolen base mark (99).
- McKenna finished with two doubles to shift his season total to 13.Â
- Walden and Drake Titus (x2) each stole a bag in Wednesday's game as well.
- Both teams used six different pitchers in the contest. Army's pitching staff compiled eight strikeouts, while Columbia recorded six.
- Matt LePoint notched his first career start, giving up one hit, two runs and four walks in 2.1 innings.Â
How It Happened
- The Black Knights jumped on its visitors early in the first after plating five runs on five hits. All five of those hits led off the game for the Cadets with McKenna coming up big with a bases clearing double to left center.
- The Lions cut into the deficit in the third following a two-out rally to cut the lead to 5-2.Â
- Army responded in the fourth with another multi-run frame after it scored four runs on two hits. All four of the Black Knights' runs during the inning were unearned.
- Columbia wouldn't go away as it answered with four runs of its own in the fifth to make it a 9-6 ballgame. A.J. DiFillipo registered a bases loaded two-RBI single during the frame to bring home two of those four runs.Â
- The Cadets extended their edge back to a reasonable lead at 11-6 in the sixth following another two unearned runs.Â
- Unfortunately, the Lions outscored the Black Knights 9-1 over the last three innings to pull out the come-from-behind win.
FACTS & FIGURES
- Army posted 12 runs on 11 hits, while Columbia accumulated 15 runs on 14 hits.
- The Lions were credited with four errors in the game to just one for the Black Knights.Â
- The Cadets left five runners on base. Columbia stranded nine.Â

- Army heads to Lehigh on Saturday for a doubleheader before closing out its weekend with a twin bill at Lafayette on Sunday.
