April 30, 2019 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team took down Sacred Heart, 12-1, here Tuesday afternoon in an out-of-conference midweek matchup.
The Black Knights controlled much of Tuesday's contest, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the Pioneers tallied their lone run of the game. Army responded though with eight unanswered runs to ultimately put the game away.
Anthony Giachin had himself a day, finishing 3-for-4 with seven runs batted in and two runs scored. He was one RBI short of tying the Academy's single-game record, which he achieved in the Cadets' victory over Air Force earlier this season.
Andre Walden and Trey Martin added two hits each, with Martin chipping in two RBI as well.
Jacob Hurtubise drew a game-high four walks to break the Academy single-season record. The junior surpassed his mark from last season (50) and now has 52 walks drawn on the year. He is also one walk away from tying Zach Price's career mark of 125, achieved from 2009-12.Â
Mike Gagliardi registered his second victory of the year after allowing just three hits and three walks over 5.0 innings.Â
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

- The Black Knights notched six strikeouts as a staff, while Sacred Heart recorded eight.
How It Happened
- Army took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning following an unearned run. Hurtubise started the frame earning a walk before a Walden single shifted him to second. Fortunately for the home side, the Pioneers made a fielding error on the play which allowed Hurtubise enough time to touch home.Â
- The Black Knights added onto their lead in the third when Giachin drilled a shot over the left field fence to score another two runs. His dinger brought home Hurtubise, who led off the inning with a walk.Â
- Giachin then registered another RBI in the fifth when his two-out single to right center scored Hurtubise from second.
- The Pioneers cut into the 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh when Joe Emerson converted on an RBI-groundout to score Bobby Garbuio.
- Army quickly answered in the bottom half after Giachin and Martin registered an RBI following a sacrifice fly and single, respectively.Â
- The Cadets then put the game away in the eighth with six runs on three hits to make it a 12-1 ballgame. Titus, Giachin and Martin all tallied a hit during the frame with Giachin notching a bases clearing double to right center.
