Cadets Collect Program-Best Five All-League Honors
April 29, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Highlighted by Caroline Raymond's Patriot League Rookie of the Year award, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team placed a program-best five cadets on the all-league teams on Monday afternoon.
Jackie Brattan and Samantha Stewart collected first team all-league honors, while Maddie Burns, Manuela Cortes and Caroline Raymond received the second team nod.
"I am super proud to see five of our cadet-athletes recognized for all-league selections this year," Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera said. "It is a true testament to the strength and success of our team as a whole that so many team members were recognized this season."
Raymond made her mark on the program during her rookie campaign, compiling a team-best 62 points on 42 goals and a team-high 23 assists. She was the third cadet in program history to score over 50 points in a single season and the first to eclipse the 60-point mark. The five-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week honoree scored in 16 of the 17 games she played in while recording six hat tricks. The Mahopac, N.Y., native additionally set the single-game program record of nine points after tallying five goals and four helpers in a road win at Boston University on April 19.
"All I can say about Caroline is we are so lucky she is on our team," Skiera said. "I would not want to face her if she were on an opposing team, ever. The mental and physical maturity in which she has carried herself with as a freshman has been beyond impressive. In particular, the manner in which she balanced plebe year at the academy with her first Division I lacrosse season is commendable. We rely on her to make big plays game after game, and she always delivers. Her physical prowess and athleticism will continue to take our program to uncharted heights for years to come, which is so exciting to think about."
As one of the top scoring threats in the nation, Brattan wreaked havoc on opposing defenses all season long. She had a stellar sophomore campaign and became the first cadet to score 50 goals in a single season, while recording the program's second-ever 50-point season. The Garden City, N.Y., native had 10 hat tricks and scored four or more goals in seven outings. A lot of her damage came on the 8-meter, as she led the nation in free position percentage after going 15-of-19. She also was a pivotal piece on draws as she broke the single-season program record for draw controls with 93 before becoming the first in program history to reach 100 in the team's Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal round win over Lehigh.
"Jackie is one of the most explosive and toughest players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching," Skiera stated. "Her dominance on the draw circle and in the offensive end has been huge for us this year. She is a threat with and without the ball on the offensive end. She makes it a habit every day to go harder than the rest and to be one of the most competitive players on our team."
Stewart, who received all-league honors for the second consecutive year, made her presence felt all over the field. The junior finished third on the team in points with 52 points on 35 goals and 17 assists. She led the team in ground balls (32), while finishing second in caused turnovers (13) and third in draw controls (75). She became just the fourth cadet in program history to eclipse 100 points in a career after recording a hat trick at Boston University.
"Sami is such a reliable workhorse for us in the midfield," Skiera said. "She is instrumental in all aspects of our game including our clear, draw controls and settled offense. Her ability to feed out of the dodge has taken her game to the next level. She rarely comes off the field for us and can grind for an entire 60 minutes which is truly awe-inspiring."
Burns was a defensive stalwart in between the pipes for the Black Knights. The junior netminder started in 16 games and made 113 saves while posting a .461 save percentage. She compiled a program-best 11 wins and recorded a 10.55 goals against average. The Ridgefield, Conn., native finished inside the top three in the Patriot League in goals against average and save percentage, while tallying double-digit saves in six outings.
"Maddie Burns is often an unsung hero for us, so we are so excited to see her receive all-league recognition," Skiera stated. "Maddie is an unbelievable competitor and always plays her best lacrosse late in the season when it matters the most. She has an unwavering focus and confidence when she is in the cage. She is reliable, hard working and a great leader of our defensive unit."
Cortes was one of four cadets to score over 30 goals during the 2019 campaign as she tied for fourth on the team with 35. The senior achieved a major milestone earlier this season after she became the first player in program history to score over 100 career goals. Her scoring prowess helped her accumulate eight hat tricks in 11 multi-goal performances.
"Manuela had an unbelievable career and has been instrumental for us from our first Division I season all the way to now as we compete for a Patriot League championship," Skiera said. "For the last four years, she has been a tough two-way midfielder for us with a nose for the cage. As our competition has evolved over the years, so has she. I couldn't be more proud of her contributions to our program and to see her recognized in her senior campaign."
