Black Knights Capture Midweek League Win

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team got back on track Wednesday when it defeated Holy Cross, 8-5, here Wednesday in a midweek Patriot League contest.
The Crusaders took a 4-3 lead in the third but the Cadets rallied back to score three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to ultimately put the game away.Â
Logan Smith had a solid performance on the mound in relief. The junior allowed just one hit, one run and one walk in 3.2 innings. Senior Cam Opp then came in to secure the win, giving up only three hits in 2.2 innings for his fourth save of the year. The two combined to strike out six during their time on the hill.
Leading Army's offense was Anthony Giachin and Trey Martin, who both registered two hits on the day and multiple runs batted in. The two scored one run apiece, while Martin brought home a team-best three RBI and Giachin two.Â
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Cadets compiled four extra base hits in the game coming from the bats of Martin, Giachin, Drake Titus and Jeremiah Adams.Â
- Martin drilled his team-leading sixth home run, while Adams added to his total as well with his third.
- Giachin and Titus both notched a double for their 15th and fifth of the year, respectively.Â
- Giachin is now four doubles away from tying Kevin McKague's program record of 19 in a season. McKague achieved that feat in 2008.
- Jacob Hurtubise and Josh White each recorded a stolen base in the contest.Â
- Hurtubise is an impressive 30-for-32 on the year, while White swiped his sixth bag.
- Anthony LoRicco earned the start, allowing four hits, four runs and one walk in 2.2 innings on the hill.
- Army's pitching staff gave up two extra base hits on the day in a triple and home run.
How It Happened
- The Cadets plated three runs on two hits in the opening frame to take an early 3-0 edge. All of those runs came home after Martin launched a shot over the left field fence to clear the bases. Giachin and John McKenna were on board with two outs following their single and walk, respectively, before Martin brought them home.
- The Crusaders answered in the third with four runs on three hits and one error. All of those runs scored with two outs in the frame.
- Army rallied in the sixth when White led off the inning with a single to left field. He scored two batters later when Titus registered an RBI-groundout to bring him home from third. Giachin then followed suit with an RBI-groundout of his own to score Hurtubise and hand Army an 8-4 advantage.
- Holy Cross would notch one run back in the seventh when Austin Masel drilled a ball over the right field fence but that would be all the visitor's would get as the Cadets closed out the final two innings to preserve the win.
FACTS & FIGURES
- Army finished with eight runs on seven hits, while Holy Cross earned five runs on eight hits.
- Both teams tallied errors in the game with the Black Knights being tagged with three and the Crusaders' one.
- The Cadets left five runners on base. Holy Cross stranded eight.Â

- Army heads down to Annapolis, Md., for a three-game weekend series with service-academy rival Navy.
- Whoever wins the weekend series will claim the coveted "Star" for the year.Â
- The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m.
