Lafayette Snaps Army’s Winning Streak
April 14, 2019 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Lafayette here Sunday afternoon.
With the outcome, the Black Knights' winning streak was halted at six-straight games.
Despite the loss on Sunday, Army still claimed the weekend series, 2-1, after notching a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Anthony Giachin, Trey Martin and John McKenna each posted two hits, while Giachin, McKenna and Jeremiah Adams all earned a run batted in.
Sam Messina was credited with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and two walks.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Giachin recorded his team-leading 14th double of the year in the opening frame.
- McKenna added his second triple of the year and of the weekend in the second frame.
- The Leopards tallied four extra base hits on the day, including two home runs.
- Jacob Hurtubise, Andre Walden, and McKenna accounted for Army's three runs.
- Ray Bartoli, Logan Smith and Cam Opp all saw action on the mound.
- Bartoli allowed just one hit and one run in 3.0 innings. Smith gave up one hit and one run in 0.1 innings, while Opp closed out the final 0.2 innings allowing one hit and one unearned run.
- Army's pitchers registered four strikeouts as a staff. Lafayette's two-man crew compiled 10.
- The Leopards turned two double plays to just one for the Cadets.
How It Happened
- The Leopards took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Richard Villa led off the frame with a solo shot over the left center fence.
- The Cadets answered in the bottom half when McKenna drilled a leadoff triple to right field. He scored during the next at bat when Adams grounded out for an RBI.
- Lafayette broke the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth after scoring three runs on one swing of the bat. A double and a walk placed two Leopards on base before Army was able to tally the first out of the frame. Unfortunately, the visitors drilled their second home run of the game during the ensuing at bat to clear the bases and take a 4-1 advantage.
- Army would not go away though, making it a 4-3 ballgame after scoring two runs on three hits in the eighth. Giachin and McKenna both tallied an RBI during the frame to bring home those two runs.
- The Leopards quickly grabbed both of those runs back in the top ninth to create a 6-3 gap between the teams.
- The Black Knights then tried to rally in the bottom half when they brought the tying run up to the plate with two outs. Unfortunately, Lafayette forced a fly out to end the inning and halt Army's potential scoring opportunity.
