Stewart, Burns Collect Weekly League Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Juniors Samantha Stewart and Maddie Burns of the Army West Point women's lacrosse team earned Patriot League weekly honors Monday afternoon.
"It was a historic week for us, coming up with our first-ever program wins against Holy Cross and Lehigh," Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera said. "Maddie and Sami played big roles in those wins. Maddie really stepped up in the cage, making some huge saves on the 8-meter and utilizing quick clears to fuel our offense. As for Sami, we are really proud of her for continuing to develop her game. Last week, she added some assists to her offensive arsenal which makes her an even more dangerous player on the offensive end."
Stewart was tabbed the midfielder of the week, while Burns was awarded the goalkeeper of the week nod. The duo received the weekly recognition from the league after helping the Black Knights go 2-0, picking up the program's first-ever wins over Holy Cross and Lehigh last week.
Stewart, who finished with 11 points on four goals and seven assists, was all over the field in the pair of contests. In Wednesday's meeting with the Crusaders at Michie Stadium, Stewart scored just one goal, but was a key distributor of the ball. The New Canaan, Conn., native handed out a career-high four assists to go along with three ground balls and a game-high eight draw controls. Over the weekend, Stewart recorded her fifth hat trick of the season after posting three goals and three assists in a 15-13 road win against Lehigh. The junior added two ground balls and three draw controls to her stat line.
Burns played a major role in the Black Knights' success this past week while defending the Army goal. The junior recorded a season-high 15 saves, three shy of tying the Academy record, in a home win over Holy Cross on Wednesday. Her play in the second half was pivotal as the Ridgefield, Conn., native thwarted the Crusaders' comeback efforts by making eight saves. She followed that performance with an 11-save outing in a road win at Lehigh on Saturday. Once again Burns was crucial down the stretch, stopping seven shots in the final frame. In the closing 18 minutes, the Cadets went ahead by a goal and Burns made five stops the rest of the way to hand Army the lead for good.
Stewart, Burns and the Black Knights return to action on Saturday for a 3 p.m. Patriot League matchup with Lafayette slated to go down at Michie Stadium.
