Army Shows Fight Against Providence, SDSU

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team dropped a pair of games against Providence, 4-3, and South Dakota State, 5-1, on the second day of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase on Saturday.
The Black Knights fell to 6-13 on the season, while the Friars improved to 7-6 and the Jackrabbits improved to 17-5.
Senior Carrie Reilly led the offense with a .500 batting average and three hits, including a triple. Fellow senior Ashley Yoo, junior Emily Ballesteros and rookie Jolie Duong each added multiple hits on the day.
In the circle, second-year Taylor Drayton tossed 5.2 solid innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering five hits. Duong pitched another complete game, bringing her season total to eight. The Houston, Texas, native struck out a season-high eight batters against SDSU in the second game of the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights struck first in the top of the third inning when a Ballesteros single plated Ally Snelling from second base to take a 1-0 lead.
- That lead was extended to three runs later that stanza when Duong blasted her first collegiate home run over the right field wall.
- The Friars managed to get two of those runs back in the home half of the third.
- Providence tied the game in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Taylor Stephen before capitalizing on an error in the seventh inning to earn the walk-off victory.

- Yoo recorded her 100th-career hit in the first inning.
- Duong slugged her first homer of the season.
- The rookie from Houston, Texas posted her second multi-RBI game.
GAME 2: SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 5, ARMY 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duong started the game on fire, striking out the side in order in the first while fanning four of the first five batters she faced.
- The Jackrabbits jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Yanney Ponce and Kerigan Torres.
- They increased the lead in the third inning after Ali Herdliska singled to make it a three-run game.
- Army started to chip away in the bottom of the fourth when Reilly launched a pitch to deep right field for an RBI triple that scored Yoo.
- SDSU put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI triple to left center by Julia Andersen.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Reilly became the first Cadet to reach 20 hits this season.
- The Riverside, Ill., native belted her team-leading second triple of the year and fifth of her career.
- She extended her hitting streak to five games.
- Reilly tied Yoo and Duong for the team lead with her fourth multi-hit game.
- Duong struck out a season-high eight batters.
- The rookie brought her innings total to 70.0 on the year.
- She has struck out a team-high 33 opposing hitters.
- Renee Poirier recorded her first hit of the season and the first since April 1, 2017 against Holy Cross.
