Black Knights Fall in Weekend Opener at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – Army West Point baseball dropped a 6-3 decision to Houston here Friday night.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never really looked back. The home side took a 4-0 advantage before the Black Knights' finally broke through in the fourth inning with an unearned run. Army then made things interesting in the top of the sixth when Trey Martin singled through the left side to score Jeremiah Adams and Josh White. That hit cut the deficit to 4-3. Unfortunately, Houston answered in the bottom half with two runs of its own to ultimately put the game away.
Martin and Jacob Hurtubise led the Cadets with two hits each.
Tyler Giovinco was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits. The senior lefty also struck out four during his time on the hill.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Anthony LoRicco was solid in his two innings of relief work. The rookie gave up just one hit during that span, while also striking out one.
- Hurtubise drilled his team-leading fourth triple of the year in the seventh inning.
- Hurtubise and Adams both stole a base, while Drake Titus was hit by a pitch.
- White earned a game-high two walks.
How It Happened
- Houston kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first. Jared Triolo struck out on a pitch in the dirt and was thrown out at first for the putout. Brad Burckel advanced to third on the play and then later scored on a throwing error.
- The Cougars added another run in the second when Drew Minter hit a sac fly to score Blake Way who doubled to lead off the frame.
- Giovinco ran into a little trouble in the third after a two-out error kept the inning alive. Joe Davis then singled to left to tack on two more runs and stretch the Cougars lead to 4-0.
- After White and Andre Walden both earned one-out walks in the fourth, Adams reached on an error to short to bring home the Black Knights' first run of the night.
- The Cadets drew within one run in the sixth after White and Adams worked their way on base with walks. Martin drove the pair home a few batters later with a two-out single to cut the deficit to 4-3.
- Houston get their runs right back in the bottom half though. Davis got things started with a leadoff home run. Minter then singled home Jonathon Thomas to extend the lead to 6-3 and ultimately put the game away for good.
FACTS & FIGURES
- Army recorded three runs on four hits, while Houston posted six runs on nine hits.
- Both teams were tagged with errors in the game as the Cougars were credited with one and the Black Knights' two.
- The Cadets left eight runners on base. Houston stranded seven throughout the game.
