Army Picks Up League-Opening Win Over Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team opened Patriot League play with a decisive 1-0 victory over Holy Cross at the Army West Point Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Knights were propelled by the stellar pitching performance of junior right-hander Macey Newbary who allowed just one hit and one walk in the game. The Missoula, Mont., native compiled a season-high five strikeouts in her first shutout of the year.
Army's offense manufactured five hits in the game, led by senior Ashley Yoo's pair of singles. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native posted her team-leading seventh multi-hit effort of the season and became the third Cadet to record 20 hits in 2019. Junior Emily Ballesteros provided the biggest hit of the game with a two-out, RBI single in the fourth inning that plated sophomore Taylor Drayton. Sophomore Taylor Livingston and rookie Bianca Gonzalez also tallied hits for the Black Knights.

- Newbary got off to a quick start for the Black Knights on the rubber with a 1-2-3 first, including a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
- The Black Knights earned the first run of the game in the fourth inning when Ballesteros slapped a two-out single over the third base bag past a diving Jessie Nagel.
- The hit scored Taylor Drayton who led off with a base on balls.
- Newbary carried a no-hit bid through five innings before Bailey Chavez dropped a leadoff single down the left field line.
