Army Splits Versus Monmouth, UNF

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team earned a 3-1 victory over Monmouth before dropping a 3-0 decision to North Florida at the USF Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Friday.

The Black Knights moved to 9-15, while the Hawks dropped to 8-7 and the Ospreys improved to 13-8.

 Senior Maddie Kim slugged a team-best three hits on the afternoon, including a multi-hit effort opposite Monmouth. Five other Cadets registered hits on the afternoon, while sophomore Ally Snelling paced the squad with two RBI.

Rookie Jolie Duong dominated in the circle once again for the Black Knights, tossing a complete game, four-hit effort. The Houston, Texas, native allowed just one run while walking two and matching her season high with eight strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kim opened the scoring for the Black Knights in the third inning with a two-out RBI single that scored Gonzalez from third.
- Gonzalez started the inning by working a leadoff, eight-pitch walk before stealing second and being sacrificed over to third.
- Monmouth responded in the top of the fifth with a solo home run by Lindsey Baron to tie the game at 1-1.
- Army answered in the sixth inning when Snelling drove in a pair with a two-out base knock.
- The sophomore catcher plated pinch runner Annie Brock and left fielder Drayton with a single to right field.
- Duong set down the Hawks in order, including striking out the final two batters to secure the victory.

- Army won back-to-back games for the second time this year.
- Kim posted her third multi-hit game of the season.
- The Santa Clara, Calif., native notched her 10th hit of the year.
- Snelling documented her 15th hit of the season.
- The Las Vegas, Nev., native moved into the team lead in RBI (14) and multi-RBI games (5).
- She added her Patriot League-leading ninth caught stealing from behind the plate.
- Duong tied Emily Ballesteros for the most walks on the squad with nine.
- The Houston, Texas, native threw her ninth complete game of the season.
- She tied a personal-best with eight strikeouts in the contest.
- Brock scored her second run of the season, tying her total from 2018.
GAME 2: NORTH FLORIDA 3, ARMY 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Ospreys jumped on the board first with a two-run first inning.
- UNF started the game with its first four batters reaching base on three hits and a walk.
- Army threatened in the top of the third, but an impressive defensive play by Dominica Cocuzza in right field allowed UNF to get out of the inning unharmed.
- The Black Knights threatened again in the fifth inning with runners on second and third, but were unable to break through.
- North Florida extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the frame when Navia Penrod doubled in Cocuzza who reached on a two-out hit.Â

- Kim extended her hitting streak to eight games, the longest active streak on the team.
- She collected the 65th hit of her career with a leadoff single in the first inning.
- Muffett posted a new personal-best with her fifth hit of the season. Â
- Taylor Livingston stole her fifth base of the season.Â

- The Black Knights close out their Florida trip with a pair of contests against Columbia and La Salle on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
