Army Falls to Butler in Extra Innings

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team dropped a hard-fought 6-3 game in nine innings to Butler on Tuesday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

The Black Knights fell to 7-14 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-10.

Four Black Knights recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Taylor Drayton's three-hit effort. Carrie Reilly, Ally Snelling and Maddie Kim also added two hits apiece. Snelling and Kim added a double and an RBI on the day as well.

In the circle, Jolie Duong scattered six hits over 6.0 innings of work, allowing two runs while striking out three. Macey Newbary came in for relief in the seventh and threw 3.0 innings. The Missoula, Mont., native allowed just three hits without issuing a free pass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Kaitlin Doud helped her own cause with an RBI ground-rule double.
- Â Kim tied the game in the fifth inning for the Cadets with an RBI double to the left center gap to plate Madi Gilmore from first.
- The Black Knights took the lead later in the frame when Butler threw down to second with the bases loaded to try and catch one of the Army runners between bases. The throw allowed Carrie Reilly just enough time to steal home, while the attempt to retire Reilly at the plate provided the other runners an opportunity to advance.
- Butler responded in the top of the sixth with a home run to left by Maddie Moore to tie the game at two apiece.
- Both sides scored a run in the eighth inning before the Bulldogs plated three runs in the top of the ninth on two hits.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Reilly and Snelling are tied for the team lead with their fifth multi-hit games of the year.
- Reilly notched the 80th hit of her career with a single in the first inning.
- Snelling recorded her third double of the season and seventh of her career.
- Drayton tied a career-high with three hits in the game.
- The Clayton, N.C., native has two multi-hit games on the year and 12 in her career.
- Kim extended her hitting streak to five games.
