Saint Joseph’s Prevails in Pitchers' Duel with Army
March 01, 2019 | Baseball
CARY, N.C. - The Army West Point baseball team saw Saint Joseph's register a 3-2 extra innings win here Friday afternoon following a pitcher's duel.
The Black Knights and Hawks were both held in check for the majority of the game as neither team was able to break through until the 10th inning.
The Hawks sparked a small rally in the top of the frame when they found themselves with runners on first and second with two outs. Brendan Hueth then stepped into the batter's box and drove a ball over the right field fence to break the game open at 3-0.
The Cadets tried to rally in the bottom half of the 10th by using a rally of their own. John McKenna and Trey Martin were both able to touch home plate to cut the lead to 3-2. Drake Titus then found himself in scoring position with two outs but Saint Joseph's was able to record the final out of the inning to strand the runner and secure the victory.
Starting pitcher Tyler Giovinco was impressive during his 7.0 innings on the mound. The senior lefty scattered just four hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
Saint Joseph's received nearly the same from its starter Cole Stetzar. The righty gave up only two hits and three walks in 5.2 innings of work. Ryan Devine then came in for some relief help, pitching the next 1.1 innings with a clean sheet.
