Black Knights Fall in High-Scoring Affair

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite career games from a trio of Black Knights, the Army West Point women's basketball team dropped an 85-80 decision at Colgate on Wednesday night in Patriot League action.
With the loss, the Black Knights remain in the seventh spot in the Patriot League standings with two games to go in the regular season. Army sits at 6-10 in league play.
Madison Hovren tied a career high with 35 points and was efficient as she was 13-of-18 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the loss. She also recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds. Kate Murray had her best game of the season with 24 points and was 10-of-22 from the field and went 3-of-9 from distance with eight rebounds and two assists. Jess Lewis narrowly missed a triple-double with 11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds and only turned it over twice while play the entire game.
The Raiders saw three players score in double figures, including a career outing for Tegan Graham, who finished with 24 points and was 4-of-5 from beyond-the-arc in the win. Rachel Thompson, who was held scoreless in the first meeting had 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Haley Greer added 16 points for Colgate. The Raiders shot the ball extremely well at 55.6 percent and made nine shot from distance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Army got out to a quick 10-5 advantage in the first couple of minutes, but Colgate tied the game at 10-10 with Summer King hitting a 3-pointer with 8:18 on the clock. Both teams shot the ball very well in the opening minutes.
- Neither team had more than a three-point lead following Army's 10-5 lead early on. Colgate had a two-point lead at 22-20 with 2:21 on the clock, but Hovren snuck in on a free throw miss for a put back and then added another layup off a Colgate turnover which helped Army gain a 25-23 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
- Hovren had 11 in the first 10 minutes, while Murray added seven points.
- Colgate came out of the break and Mylah Chandler hit a three to give the home team the lead in the first minute of the quarter at 26-25. Lindsey Scamman answered with a layup on the other end to regain the lead for Army.
- The teams traded buckets, but Colgate's shots were 3-pointers by Graham as she drained threes on back-to-back possessions and Colgate led 37-32 with 5:18 left in the half.
- Army got the lead down to one at 41-40 with Murray sinking a 3-pointer from the left, but Colgate closed out the half with a 6-0 run and had a 47-40 lead at the break.
- The Raiders' advantage ballooned to nine after King hit a jumped in the opening moments of the third. Army, however, was composed and slice the lead to three points with buckets from Hovren and Murray and it was 49-46 with 7:28 on the clock.
- Haley Greer put Colgate back up by eight points with seven points over a minute span and then Thompson answered a Hovren layup with two points of her own and with 4:03 on the clock, Colgate led 58-50.
- Once again, the Black Knights were not going to make it easy for the Raiders on their home floor as Army finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 58-58 going into the final frame.
- Army was able to gain the lead in the fourth and had it up to as much as four points with 5:51 remaining, but the Raiders were too tough to put away.
- After Lewis nailed a jumper to give Army a 71-67 lead, Colgate went on an 11-2 run to takeover the lead at 78-73.
- Army couldn't get closer than four points after that run and the Raiders closed out the Black Knights for the 85-80 win.
