Giachin Earns Player of the Week Nods
February 19, 2019 | Baseball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army West Point baseball saw sophomore infielder Anthony Giachin garner Patriot League Player of the Week praise Tuesday.
Â
This was the league's first weekly honors of the season and Giachin's first as a player of the week. The Livingston, N.J., native was tabbed the rookie of the week on three different occasions last season before being selected the 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.
Â
Giachin batted .429 (6-for-14) during Army's 1-2 opening weekend that included a victory over service-academy rival Air Force. The sophomore drove in 11 runs on three doubles and one home run while also scoring four times himself. He closed the weekend with a .857 slugging and .500 on-base percentage.
Â
A highlight from the weekend was his 5-for-5 performance with two doubles, one home run, four runs scored and eight RBIs in a 17-2 win over Air Force in the season opener. His eight RBI tied an Academy record for most in a game and was the first time a cadet achieved that feat since Mike Scioletti did so against New York Tech in 1997. He was also one triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the contest.
Â
For his impressive performance, Giachin was also named the College Sports Madness Patriot League Player of the Week.
Â
Also receiving honorable mention praise was senior pitcher Daniel Burggraaf, who allowed just three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits through 6.1 innings in a no-decision against No. 1 LSU. The right-hander struck out five, only walked one, and held the Tigers' offense to a .182 batting average.
Â
Giachin, Burggraaf and the rest of the Army team heads to Farmville, Va., this weekend to take on Longwood in a four-game weekend series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
