February 11, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After a standout performance in his collegiate debut, Brendan Nichtern of the Army West Point men's lacrosse team was tabbed the Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
The Massapequa, N.Y., native led the Black Knights with seven points in Saturday's overtime victory against #18/19 UMass and netted the game-winner.
Nichtern scored four goals and dished out three assists in the game. His fourth and final score was the golden goal that came 26 seconds into the extra time. Nichtern is the first freshman to tally at least seven points in their first game in over 15 years.
He scored four goals on just five shots for a .800 shot percentage. For the fifth year in a row, the Cadets topped #18/19 UMass in their season opener. The victory also marked the team's first over a ranked opponent since defeating #10/11 Rutgers last February. It was also Army's first overtime victory since 2017 when the Black Knights bested Notre Dame.
The Black Knights will continue the start of their season on the road next weekend when Army faces #12 Rutgers in New Brunswick, N.J.
