Postgame Notes: Army vs. UMass

DEFENSE
Â
- Army won the toss and elected to defer.
- Game captains Kelvin Hopkins Jr. and Elijah Riley were joined at the coin toss by Chris Gregg, David Cooper, and Ryan Parker. Â
- The Black Knights honored the 1stInfantry with their insignia on the back of their helmets.
- Army finished with a season-high 546 yards of total offense (498 rushing, 48 passing).
- The 498 rushing yards for the Black Knights is good for 19thin program history. Since taking over as head coach in 2014, Jeff Monken and his teams own seven of the top 20 team rushing performances in program history.Â
- West Point had 34 first downs in the contest, the most in a single game for the program since having 35 vs. Colgate on Nov. 18, 1989.Â
- Seven different Army players scored a touchdown, the most since Sept. 1, 2017 when the Black Knights had 10 players find the end zone against Fordham.Â
- Sandon McCoy recorded three touchdowns on the ground, a career-high for him.He is the first Army player to score at least three rushing TDs in a game since Kelvin Hopkins Jr. had five against Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 22, 2018.
- McCoy, who now has two multi-rushing TD games, finished with 52 yards on 14 carries.Â
- The 83-yard rushing touchdown by Jabari Laws was the longest rushing play from scrimmage for an Army player since Oct. 12, 2013 when Terry Baggett scampered for a 96-yard run against Eastern Michigan.
- It is the second longest rush ever for a quarterback in the program's 129-year history. Quarterback George Smythe had a 95-yard rush against Lebanon Valley in 1923.Â
- Overall, it is the sixth longest rush ever in program history.Â
- Laws finished with 140 yards on the ground on eight carries (17.5 average). The 140 yards bests his previous career-high at UTSA (137). It is the most rushing yards for an Army QB since Hopkins had 170 vs. Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl last season.Â
- Connor Slomka recorded his fourth touchdown of the season and the 13thof his career. He rushed for 42 yards on nine attempts.Â
- Artice Hobbs IVÂ scored his second rushing touchdown of the season (3rdoverall). He now has five career touchdowns, four of them on rushes. He added a 30-yard reception.Â
DEFENSE
- Army's defense held UMass to 125 total yards (26 rushing, 99 passing), a program record for the fewest yardage allowed to an FBS opponent. West Point limited UMass to just 19 yards in the second half.Â
- The Black Knights limited the Minutemen to 26 rushing yards on 26 attempts, the fewest since allowing 10 to Lafayette on Oct. 15, 2016.Â
- With the 99 passing yards allowed to UMass and 16 yards allowed at Air Force, it marks the first time since 2017 that Army has held consecutive opponents to less than 100 yards passing (12/9 vs. Navy – 20 yards; 12/23 vs. San Diego State – 25 yards).Â
- The Black Knights had a pair of interceptions, giving them 16 takeaways this season and have scored 68 points off of those takeaways.Â
- Ryan Velez had the first takeaway, as he tallied the second interception of his career and returned it for 16 yards.Â
- Elijah Riley added the other takeaway with an interception, his third this season and the seventh of his career. The senior captain has now had a hand in six takeaways this season (3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles).
- Donavan Lynch tallied 1.5 sacks, the firsts o f his career.Â
- Jacob Covington recorded a career-high two TFLs and now has six total for his career. He also added a half sack, giving him 1.5 sacks on the year. Â
- Edriece Patterson also added a sack and now has 2.5 this year and 4.5 for his career.
- In his first career start,Ryan Parker made three tackles, including a half TFL.Â
