Cadets Fall to Binghamton in Non-League Road Tilt

VESTAL, N.Y. – Despite a late second-half surge by Tommy Funk, the Army West Point men's basketball team was unable to overcome a double-digit deficit and ultimately fell, 88-73, to Binghamton on Saturday afternoon.
Funk was a catalyst in the Black Knights' (2-3) comeback efforts in the second half, scoring 18 of his season-high 20 points in the final stanza. The senior point guard added six assists and three boards to his stat line for the night against the Bearcats (3-3).
Matt Wilson also played a major role for Army opposite Binghamton, finishing with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to pair with a team-high nine boards. Lonnie Grayson was the third cadet in double-digit scoring, putting up 11 points, while fellow starters Tucker Blackwell and Alex King added eight and seven, respectively.

- He passed Kevin Ferguson '16, Darryle Kouns '59 and Derrick Canada '90 to move into 28th in all-time points with 1,077.
- The Warrington, Pa., native recorded five or more assists in a game for the fourth time this season.
- Wilson notched his first 20-point outing of the season and the 10th of his career.
- It was just the third time in his career that he knocked down double-digit shots in a game.
- He is now tied with Mike Silliman '66 for 10th in program history in career field goals made with 492.
- The senior passed Jason Wands '97 for eighth in all-time rebounds with 645.
- He extended his double-digit scoring streak to three games.
- Army assisted on 54 percent of its made shots.
- It's the fifth time this year that the Black Knights assisted on over 50 percent of their makes from the field.
- The Cadets scored 47 percent of their points from inside the paint.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army and Binghamton battled back and forth for much of the opening half. The Bearcats led for majority of the stanza but could not build a lead larger than six until they went an 11-3 run over the course of the final four minutes.
- The struggles for the Bearcats came from deep as they made just 7-of-20 shots from long range. However, three of those 3-pointers came during the late run that gave Binghamton a, 42-31, advantage at the break.
- The Bearcats lead continued to grow and got as large as 15, 63-48, with 11:14 remaining. That was when Funk put his foot on the pedal and began to attack for Army. The senior dropped 11 points and helped sparked a 13-5 run to bring the Black Knights within seven, 66-59, with 7:45 on the clock.
- Binghamton then turned to their top scoring guard, Sam Sessoms. He delivered four consecutive baskets to bring the lead back into double-digits, which the team held for the remainder of play to secure the home win.
