Rifle Takes Second Place in All-Academy Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team earned a second place finish in the All-Academy President's Trophy Saturday morning at the Tronsue Marksmanship Center.
The Black Knights finished with an aggregate score of 4669, behind only Air Force (4682). Navy (4664) and Coast Guard (4567) took third and fourth place respectively. By the service academy scoring system Army posted an aggregate score of 5817, which was also good for second place.
"It was a decent day. It feels good to be shooting this well at the beginning of the season," said head coach Web Wright. "We have two NCAA qualifying scores on record and there is still room to improve."
Army had a pair of shooters finish in the top-five aggregate scores, with Clayton's 1177 earning him the second highest score and Lauren McMahan's 1173 taking fourth place.
"Clayton and Lauren put together good scores which set the tone for the match," Wright said. "And for most of the Plebes, this was their first NCAA competition, and they fared pretty well."
"Overall, I'm pleased with our performance," Wright added. "We have a little work to do this week before heading to Lincoln to face the Huskers and Rachel Martin, our former assistant coach."

- Hanson and McMahan's scores paced the way for the Black Knights. The next highest finish was junior captain Kaitlyn Kutz, who registered a score of 1163, which was the eighth highest mark on the day.
- The top shooter on the day was Air Force's Peter Fiori who had a score of 1180.
AIR RIFLE: 2351 - Service Match Format Score*: 2885
- McMahan posted the highest air rifle score of the day for Army at 592, which was the fourth highest total of all the competitors. Close behind her was Hanson, who finished sixth with a score of 591.
- Kutz had the next highest Army score with a mark of 587, while Nicholas Cheshire, Sawyer Williams and Aaron Flower each had scores of 581.
- Also competing in air rifle for the Black Knights were: Emily Gay (577), Ashley Clegg (575), Christian Conrad (574), Anastasia Osbourne (568), Kirsten Coombes (561) and Spencer Gillis (520).
SMALLBORE: 2318 - Service Match Format Score*: 2932
- Army had four top-10 finishers in smallbore: Hanson (586, 2nd place), McMahan (581, 3rd place), Kutz (576, 8th place) and Cheshire (575, 9th place).
- Hanson and McMahan each set new season highs with their score.
- Also representing the Black Knights in smallbore were: William (567), Conrad 564), Flowers (557), Osbourne (557), Coombes (556) and Gay (547).
