Army Opens Conference Play With Win Over RMU
October 19, 2019 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team continued its hot start with a 4-1 victory over conference foe RV Robert Morris on Saturday night.
The Black Knights, who are now 3-0 to start the season, were guided by a strong performance in net by junior Trevin Kozlowski, who blanked the Colonials through the first 50 minutes of play and stopped 17-18 shots in the game.
Senior Michael Wilson recorded the team's first multi-goal effort of the year with his second and third goals of the year. The senior, who missed much of the second half of the teams 2018-19 campaign with an injury, is now tied for the team lead in points with John Zimmerman at four. Zimmerman also added a multi-point effort with two assists in the contest.
Seniors Zach Evancho and Alex Wilkinson both recorded their first goals of the season to complete the scoring for the Cadets.
One major strength in the early part of the season continued in this one, as Army managed to kill all five of Robert Morris' power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit has now fended off 15 out of their opponents 16 power play opportunities (.938) to lead Atlantic Hockey.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
·        The game was scoreless for the first eight minutes before senior Alex Wilkinson opened the scoring with his first of the year. With his team on the power play, the defenseman received a pass from Zach Evancho and buried the shot above the goalies left shoulder to give Army a 1-0 lead.
·        Later in the period, with his team down a man, senior Michael Wilson was able to gather up a loose puck and go end-to-end for the first of what would be a two-goal night.
·        Army played some tic-tac-toe hockey on their third goal, as with two minutes remaining in period two, Colin Bilek moved the puck to John Zimmerman who then found Zach Evancho who lit the lamp for the first time this year.
·        Robert Morris finally broke through on Kozlowski halfway through the third, as Jacob Coleman was able to force one through to get the Colonials on the board.
·        The Black Knights added an exclamation point four minutes later when Michael Wilson broke free on another breakaway, this time finding the back of the net with the teams at even strength to cap off a 4-1 Army win.
UP NEXT: The teams will face-off again tomorrow at Tate Rink with a scheduled start time of 4:05 p.m.
