October 15, 2019 | Volleyball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team stretched its conference winning streak to three games with a home victory over Lafayette on Tuesday.
The Black Knights (14-6, 5-2) faced a strong challenge in a marathon second set, when the teams fought off a combined 13 set points before Lafayette was able to take the set 35-33. Army bounced back stronger in the final two sets, raising its hitting percentage to .300 in the third and then .500 in the fourth to close out the match 3-1.
"I'm very proud of the team again," Head coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. "That second set was exciting, not for a coach but for everyone else. We have warriors. We have soldiers and I'm really happy with how the team responded. They were able to take a deep breath and said 'Okay, next set.' You could tell by the way we ran our offense and the way we attacked. We got better in each set with hitting percentage and blocking, so I'm very proud of the response."
The win improves Army's all-time record against Lafayette to 55-4. The team is now 5-2 in Patriot League play, placing them third behind Colgate and American.
Sophomore Emmy Barnhorst lead the offense down the stretch, recording five of her match-leading 14 kills in the final set. She also added six total blocks in the match to total 18.5 points. Setter Hannah Pressley recorded a season-high 37 assists with five kills and five total blocks. Senior Allie Strong posted her third double-double in the past four matches with 13 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Peyton Schendt and Madison Wendel both played an important role in the match with six and four kills, respectively.
Army now sets its sight on another home match on Saturday when they take on conference foe Loyola at 2 p.m. at Gillis Field House.
