October 12, 2019 | Volleyball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point volleyball team completed a sweep of its two-game Pennsylvania road trip with a 3-0 win over Lehigh on Saturday.
"Overall great win for the team!" Head coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. "Lehigh is a good team, so this is an accomplishment for us. Our defense was good and different hitters shined at the right time"Â
It took some time for Army to get going in this one, as they fell behind 7-2 in the first set. But the Black Knights were able to rattle off nine consecutive points to jump in front and eventually take the first set 25-19. The team hit .419 in the first set with Emmy Barnhorst leading the way with 7 points.
The teams battled it out in the second set, with the lead changing hands seven times in the frame. Army was able to grind it out, taking the set 25-23.
"It was great to see us win that second set when it was a tight game," Kovaci Lee said "We were mentally tough and were able to close it out."Â
The Black Knights stormed towards the finish at the start of set three, taking the first 10 points. Lehigh would not go away quietly, fending off four consecutive set points before Army was able close out the set 25-21 to win the match.
Seniors Sydney Morriss (11) and Allie Strong (10) recorded the only double-digit kills matches for Army. Strong added 10 digs to complete the double-double. Nikki Lum produced a double-double of her own with 19 assists and 10 digs.
"I'm just so proud of the entire team and coaching staff," Kovaci Lee added. "Everyone is invested and that is great to see because it is still a long season. We will need everyone to be ready physically and mentally as we move forward."Â
The win coupled with Friday's win at Bucknell improves Army's conference record to 4-2 with two home conference matchups slated for next week. The Black Knights will begin the homestand on Tuesday night against Lafayette at Gillis Field House.
