Army Competes At Nittany Lion Challenge
January 12, 2019 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Army West Point track and field team competed in its first road meet of the season at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday.Â
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"I thought we were pretty average today. We had some outstanding performances, but we also had some equally underwhelming results. It is not unexpected. The long break from school and structured training can create havoc for some kids and some of the results today are a reflection of that. And then there are those kids that get everything done and actually get better over the break. We had some success on the track with wins in the 200 and the 400. Kenneth Brinson and Jacob Stauffer did a nice job in going one and two in the men's weight throw. The guys in the 3000 did a nice job of measuring the race. Five of the seven we entered had lifetime bests. Those guys clearly did a good job of training over the break. Roman Ollar picked up right where he left off in the fall and almost pulled off the win. Jackson Sullivan just missed the school record in the men's 1000m. He has really made himself into a strong middle distance runner. Maybe the best performance of the day came from Justin Young in the 60m hurdles. He set a personal best in the prelims and then again in the finals. He will continue to get better and better.Â
On the women's side, we got some nice runs on the track from Haley Watson, Abby Halbrook and Cassie Mundekis. Haley gave us our only win today on the women's side and Abby looked very good in the mile. Cassie came very close tou our school record in the 1000. She did a nice job of maintaining her composure in a race where the Penn State women set the NCAA record for the 1000m. There were other nice improvements and consistent performances from our women. We still have a lot to work on and we will get down to the business of that next week." Â
