Army Strong At Keydet Invitational
January 19, 2019 | Men's Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Va. - After a strong performance on Friday, the Army West Point men's track and field team completed competition at the Keydet Invitational at VMI.Â
Freshman Justin Young continued his strong rookie campaign by winning the men's 60 meter hurdles. In three appearances in the 60 meter hurdles finals, Young has two victories and a second place finish.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike SmithÂ
"We scheduled this meet so that we could compete over two days and get a lot of work done. The split format allowed some people to double in events that they wouldn't normally get to do and we ran multiple relays. The facility at VMI is brand new and they accommodated our numbers, so it really was a great situation for our teams.Â
Our first meet at Penn State was our "rust buster," so I expected to see some better execution and some improved performances this weekend and that is what happened. The wins were the obvious highlights for us, but behind those results were all of the second place finishes and new personal best marks that we need as we build toward the championship season.Â
Predictably, our firsties led the way in many events. Kenneth Brinson and Ben Boswell both showed why they are at the top of the Patriot League lists in various events. Our depth was also particularly good this weekend with the emergence of some of our young people. Justin Young showed the level of consistency in the rounds of the hurdles that will propel him to some podium finishes this winter and Michael Mullally is just starting to figure things out with the 42-inch hurdles.Â
In the field events, I thought we did some good things. Our young guys in the shot put are also coming on at the right time.Â
Ultimately, I want to see us improve on a week to week basis. That can come in the form of technical adjustments, overall fitness gains and results. All three of those variables were positives this weekend and collectively we are pointing in the right direction as we close in on the championship season."
