Black Knights Force Fifth Set, Falls to UNH

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Army West Point volleyball team rallied in the fourth set against New Hampshire Saturday to force a decisive fifth frame of action. The Wildcats went on to capture the match after a 15-12 fifth set score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Army 25, UNH 11)
- The Black Knights led the Wildcats 12-4 early in the set.
- They then jumped to a 20-7 advantage after a five-point run.
- Two kills by Courtney Horace fueled the run which put the set out of reach for New Hampshire.
- Cate Buckingham helped Army coast to victory in set one with two of Army's final four points.
SECOND SET (UNH 25, Army 22)
- Army and New Hampshire were tied at 7-7 in the second before the Wildcats pulled away to take a 13-8 lead.
- The Black Knights responded with a five point streak to re-tie the set at 13-13.
- With the set tied at 21-all, the Wildcats outscored the Cadets 4-1 to tie the match.
THIRD SET (UNH 25, Army 23)
- The Black Knights trailed 11-9 in the third, but were able to battle back and tie things up at 17-17.
- This sparked a 4-0 run for Army where Horace notched two kills and Sydney Morriss had one.
- The fourth point was off a block by Emmy Barnhorst and Morriss.
- A 6-1 scoring streak by the Wildcats however allowed them to defeat Army 25-23 in the set.
FOURTH SET (Army 25, UNH 15)
- The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle with the Black Knights pulling ahead 14-10.
- A 4-1 scoring streak by the Cadets allowed Army to take an 18-11 advantage.
- The Black Knights did not look back and allowed just four more points by the Wildcats in the set to win 25-15 and to force a fifth.
FIFTH SET (UNH 15, Army 12)
- New Hampshire went ahead right away in the fifth set and never relinquished the lead to the Black Knights.
- Army came back and made it a two-point set trailing 12-10, but the Wildcats tallied the final three points to win compared to Army's two to win the match.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Barnhorst scored a team-leading 19.5 points in today's match.
- The freshman boasted 15 kills, five blocks and a service ace.
- She hit .406 on the day which ties her career-high.
- Horace also tallied 15 kills in the match, while Morriss (.407) and Buckingham (.556) each had 13.
- Lauren Janok recorded 32 assists and eight digs.
- Nikki Lum posted 25 assists, 12 digs and three service aces. It was the second-straight match in which she recorded a double-double.
- Ana Oglivie led the team with 23 digs.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will head down to Florida next weekend and will take on Florida International and Jacksonville on Friday, while they take on top-ranked Florida on Saturday.
