Army Outlasts Lafayette in Home Win
September 26, 2018 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – After a one-hour-and-32-minute lightning delay, the Army West Point women's soccer team outlasted Lafayette for a 1-0 victory at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Erynn Johns came up with the game-deciding play in the 21st minute when she stole the ball off the foot of a Lafayette defender and dribbled around the Leopard player. The Austin, Texas, native then fired a shot from 18-yards out that crept past the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar to give the Black Knights a 1-0 edge.
After controlling play for most of the first half, the home side saw Lafayette assert itself and possessed the ball through the first 20 minutes of the final period. That run came to an end with 35:02 remaining, however, when a lightning strike started a 1:32 delay. When the two sides returned to the field, the Cadets were able to regroup and prevent Lafayette from creating any more threatening scoring chances.
Johns led the Black Knights with a pair of shots on goal, while sophomore Morgan Walsh (four shots) and senior Sydney Witham (two shots) added multiple shots for the Black Knights. Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia continues to be a wall for the Cadets with her eighth shutout in 12 games this season, needing to make five saves.
