Army Perseveres Past Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Trailing in the fifth set, the Army West Point volleyball team rallied back to defeat Holy Cross, 3-2, on Sunday evening.

It was the Black Knights' first Patriot League victory of 2018 and the team's sixth overall this season.

Three Cadets notched double-doubles in the win. As a team, Army held a 66-46 advantage in kills over the Crusaders and also led in assists (63-44), blocks (12-7) and digs (80-62).

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Army 25, Holy Cross 19)
- The Black Knights started strong against the Crusaders with a commanding 14-5 lead.
- Later in the set, a kill by Monica Eckford and a service ace by Allie Strong set Army up for set point.
- Holy Cross scored four in a row, but a final kill by Strong clinched the set for Army.
- Courtney Horace led the Black Knights with four kills while hitting .600 in the set.
SECOND SET (Holy Cross 27, Army 25)
- The Crusaders bounced back in the second set of action taking it 27-25.
- The set featured 16 tie scores and four lead changes.
- A kill by Eckford tied things up at 24-24 before Emmy Barnhorst notched a kill to re-tie the score at 25-25.
- Holy Cross would go on to score the final two points to tie the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET (Army 25, Holy Cross 12)
- The Black Knights commanded the third set limiting the Crusaders to 12 points and hitting .448 as a team with 17 kills.
- Barnhorst led in the set with five kills and a .571 hitting percentage. She also totaled two block assists in the effort.
FOURTH SET (Holy Cross 25, Army 18)
- Holy Cross charged on in the fourth to tie things up at 2-2 in the match.
- After the media timeout, the Crusaders scored nine unanswered points for a 22-16 advantage in the set.
- Holy Cross outscored Army 4-2 to close-out the set and force a fifth frame.
FIFTH SET (Army 15, Holy Cross 12)
- The Crusaders jumped ahead to a 4-1 lead, but the Black Knights followed that up with three straight points to even the score at 4-all.
- Sydney Morriss was credited with a kill in the stretch, while Barnhorst and Hannah Presley teamed up for a block and Nikki Lum contributed a service ace.
- The Crusaders went on to lead 9-5, but kills by Cate Buckingham and Eckford fueled Army to comeback and tie things again at 9-9.
- Presley and Eckford notched a block a point later and Barnhorst tallied an ace to take an 11-9 lead.
- The Crusaders were charged with a service error on the final play giving the Black Knights the victory.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Presley recorded a career-high 43 assists and had 14 digs to notch her second double-double of the season.
- Lum also had a double-double fueled by her 15 assist and 14 dig performance.
- The third double-double effort is credited to Lisa Sullivan who notched 11 kills and 14 digs, while also tallying four total blocks.
- Barnhorst led Army's scoring with 18 kills and a .405 hitting percentage. She added five block assists and three digs to total 21.5 points.
- Morriss added 13 kills, while Eckford recorded 12.
- Ana Oglivie turned out 23 digs in the match and added two service aces and four assists.
