WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 9-8 game against Boston University on Saturday at Michie Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Black Knights honored seniors Amy Johnston, Kiersten Spencer, Kristen McCarty and Rachel Hornick, as well as manager Nick Lake, during their senior day ceremony.
After the Terriers scored the opening goal 40 seconds into the game on a free position, Army stormed back with tallies by Mikayla Bergin and Hornick to take a 2-1 lead. Boston evened the score as part of a 4-1 run to close out the opening half.
Army returned the favor by starting the second half on a 4-1 run of its own, including the first two goals to erase the halftime deficit. With just more than 15 minutes remaining in the contest, Boston scored a quick three-straight goals in 2:39 to retake the lead.
The Black Knights added a late man-up goal from rookie Beth Hofmann, but they were never able to get the equalizer.

WHAT'S THE WORD?
- Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera – "It's tough because we played them in a one-goal game last year and it ended in a similar situation with us getting a shot in the last minute to tie it up. So it's a little disappointing to have the same result two years in a row, but I'm proud of how well we've competed in the Patriot League and against a tough Boston U. team that's typically at the top of the league standings. Today, we definitely got outmuscled on the draws which has been a staple for us all year. We also struggled with our transitions and didn't have as much confidence with the ball as we're used to. On the offensive end, we really needed some of our top players to step up and finish their shots. We continually put the ball in the hands of our playmakers, but I felt that today they were a bit flat with their shooting I would've liked to see them finish more in pressure situations.
- Sr. Attacker Rachel Hornick – "Part of our game plan was to really work our offense. In the beginning, we were able to do that by shifting their defense and finding the open player. But after a string of turnovers in our transition we didn't really have the ball on the attack as much as we used to so we lost some of that momentum. We rushed some opportunities and took some bad shots which really hurt us.
- So. Goalie Maddie Burns – "I've been working on my mental game a lot lately and making sure that I'm not holding back, playing reserved or let anything bother me while I'm out there. I just want to play for my team and leave it all out on the field every game. Our defense is really locked in when we're doing a scout and learning everything we can about the opponent so that we're prepared for anything they're going to throw at us. They do a great job marking up who they're supposed to mark and communicating on the field which really helps take away the other teams' best threats."
