Army Renews Rivalry with Navy Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army-Navy rivalry returns to the banks of the Hudson this Saturday when the Black Knights and Midshipmen clash on CBS Sports Network.
The 98th annual Army-Navy men's lacrosse game will begin at 12 p.m.
The teams will also be competing for one of two Stars up for grabs on the day. Army and Navy are tied in the annual Star Series presented by USAA and kick off the doubleheader with the women's lacrosse teams.

The 98th annual Army-Navy men's lacrosse game will begin at 12 p.m.

ARMY (5-5, 2-4 Patriot League)
- The Black Knights are 9-8 against the Mids under head coach Joe Alberici.
- Dave Ryan and Evan Washburn will be on the call for Saturday's game at Michie Stadium.
- Army and Navy will battle at Michie for the 49th time in program history.
- The Midshipmen hold a 60-35-3 advantage in the series, but Army leads 9-8 over the last 13 seasons.
- Last season it was Navy who claimed victory by a 10-6 score.
- Nate Jones and David Symmes posted two goals in the game, while Ted Glesener added a tally. AJ Barretto finished with six saves in the effort.
- Army outshot the Mids 41-30 and had eight turnovers compared to Navy's 16. The opposition did, however, control faceoffs with an 11-8 advantage.

- The Midshipmen enter the weekend at 7-4 overall and 6-1 in Patriot League contests.
- Navy's lone league loss comes from Loyola (15-9).
- The Mids are riding a three-game winning streak after topping Lehigh (10-7), Holy Cross (5-4) and Col-gate (12-10).
- Saturday's game will be Navy's third on CBS Sports Network this season. The team is 1-1 when nation-ally televised.
- One of Navy's most impactful players is faceoff specialist Joe Varello.
- He enters the weekend with a league-leading 6.33 groundballs per game and a second-best .605 efficiency on draws.
- Not to be overlooked is goalie Ryan Kern who averages 9.50 saves per game and a .537 save percent-age to trail Barretto.
- Offensively, Ryan Wade paces the Mids with 2.00 assists per game, while Christian Daniel is the primary scorer with 19 goals.
- Casey Rees returned to Navy's lineup this season, after missing last year due to injury, and has garnered 14 points.
MAKING RANK
- The Cadets rank second nationally in scoring defense with just 7.10 goals allowed per game.
- On the other side, Navy is 12th with 8.64.
- This has allowed Army to rank 14th nationally in scoring margin (2.50).
- Army's defensive core is responsible for 9.55 caused turnovers per game to rank fifth in college lacrosse.
- Johnny Surdick leads the squad with 17 caused turnovers and sits tied for 14th in the country in caused turnovers per game at 1.89 while covering opponent's top scorer.
- AJ Barretto's 7.03 goals against average is good for third in college lacrosse.
- The Black Knights have held their opponents to under five goals on three occasions in 2018.
- Offensively, Army has reached double-digit goals on four occasions, three in victories.
MILESTONE TRACKER
- Jones eclipsed the 100 career point mark last weekend. He has posted three points in all three of Army's last games and now totals 102 in his career.
- The junior joined 32 others who have accomplished the feat in Army's 101-year history.
- The 2018 senior class currently has 37 wins. If the Cadets capture four, more they tie the record at 41. This was set by the Class of 1985 and tied by last year's Class of 2017.
STREAKS
- Jones is the lone player to notch at least one goal in every game played this season and a minimum of two points.
- In his last three appearances, Jones has totaled nine points.
- Glancy has tallied a point in every appearance this season. He boasts eight in the last three games.
AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
- April marks Autism Awareness month and it will be the second year in a row that Army will don the helmet decal in honor of the cause.
- They decided to add the logo on the back of the helmet after Ashton Guidi of Goshen, N.Y., sent Coach Alberici a handwritten letter asking the team "stand up for the little guy" last season.
- This year, Ashton wrote a letter to the rest of the league inviting them to help spread awareness as well.
IT'S ON US
- Saturday is Army's Teal Game and the team will be wearing teal ribbons to honor Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.
- The theme is #LoveBetter which emphasizes how we can all be better friends, partners and team-mates.
CLASS OF 2018
- The senior class boasts 37 wins in their careers.
- The group accounts for 74 points, 146 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers through the first 10 games of the season.
- Army's seniors have produced half of the offensive points so far.
ARMY LEADERS
- Jones leads the Black Knights offensively with 28 points. He tops the team with 19 goals and is followed by Conor Glancy (16) and Symmes (13).
- John Ragno boasts a .583 faceoff efficiency and is fourth on the team in ground balls with 27.
- Jon LaMonica leads the squad with 49 groundballs and averages 4.9 per game, while Surdick has 33.
- Barretto has made 79 saves. He averages 7.03 goals against and has a .545 save percentage.
ARMY-NAVY STAR SERIES
- The 2017-18 Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA is a tight race.
- Both the Star Series record (9-9-2) and overall record (12-12-2) between the rivals is deadlocked.
- There are four more Stars on the line with two up for grabs on Saturday. It will be the first women's lacrosse game that results in a Star.
NATIONAL AUDIENCE
- The Black Knights will play on CBS Sports Network for the next two regular season contests.
- The greatest rivalry in college lacrosse, Army-Navy, takes center stage at Michie Stadium with a noon faceoff Saturday.
- The final regular season game for the Black Knights on CBS Sports Network will be the last Patriot League matchup of the season at Loyola at 7 p.m. on April 20.
