March 08, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
Â
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Rachel Hornick of the Army West Point women's lacrosse team became the first player in program history to reach 100 career points in the team's 19-4 victory over Wofford Thursday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Â
The Black Knights improved to 5-2 on the year, while Wofford fell to 0-3.
Â
Army scored early and often in the first half with the first tally coming 2:24 into the contest. Second-year Emma Roerty got the ball rolling for the Black Knights on a feed from Hornick before rookie Jackie Brattan doubled the home team's score 35 seconds later with a free position score. The Garden City, N.Y., native added her second consecutive strike before a pair of goals separated by 21 seconds from Maddie Miller and Manuela Cortes pushed the advantage to five goals less than seven minutes into the game.
Â
The Black Knights went on to score the first 13 goals of the contest before the Terriers broke through with 2:14 left in the first half when JoJo Franklin scored on a free position attempt. Brattan, Hornick, Miller and Mikayla Bergin all led the charge offensively in the opening 30 minutes, all scoring multiple goals.
Â
That offensive success continued in the second half as the Cadets scored the first six goals of the final period. Miller picked up the hat trick with the frame's first score as the clock read 26:42. Cortes added a pair in the final stanza to join Miller with a hat trick as well.
Â
In total, 11 cadet-athletes scored goals in the game with six posting a multi-goal effort. Hornick contributed a game-high six points on two goals and four assists, being joined by Miller, Bergin, Roerty and Amy Johnston as players who scored a goal and dished out an assist.
Â
Goalie Maddie Burns played the first 30 minutes, stopping one of the two shots she faced. The Ridgefield, Conn., improved to 5-1 on the season, tying the single season program record for goalie wins.
