Black Knights Drop Close Contest to Brown

HANOVER, N.H. – The Army West Point hockey team suffered a 5-3 setback to Brown on Sunday evening in the final game of the Ledyard Classic.

The Black Knights were first on the board with a goal from senior captain Taylor Maruya. The Bears answered back however with two scores in the first period and would not trail again in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights were the first to score in the game.
- Daniel Haider won the faceoff at the right dot as Tipper Higgins gained control and Maruya passed the puck back to Dalton MacAfee who was waiting at the blue line.
- MacAfee one-timed it to the net as Maruya crossed in front and tipped it past Gavin Nieto.
- The Bears answered back with two-straight goals to close out the frame.
- Halfway through the second stanza, Haider scored a goal of his own to tie the game at 2-2.
- Marshal Plunkett cleared the puck up to Zach Evancho who carried the puck up the boards and dumped it down to Haider for a 2-on-1.
- Haider fired the shot past Nieto's glove side for the score.
- Brown was able to take its second lead of the game with a goal with 4:21 to play in the middle frame.
- The Black Knights re-tied the game at the 7:23 mark in the third period with a power play goal by Brendan Soucie.
- Colin Bilek split two Brown defenders finding Soucie all alone on the right side for the one-timer.
- The lead didn't last long whoever as the Bears scored to gain a 4-3 lead six minutes later.
- Brown scored an empty net insurance goal with 19 seconds remaining to secure the game.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Maruya scored his first goal of the season.
- The senior captain now has 32 points in his career.
- Evancho notched his third multi-assist game of the season tonight and 12th multi-point in his career.
- The Buffalo, N.Y., native boasts 18 points this year to tie for first with MacAfee.
- MacAfee recorded his 15th helper of the season and 45th in his career.
- Haider netted goal number three of the year also garnering his fifth point.
- Soucie posted his second goal of the weekend in Sunday's game.
- The junior scored the only power play goal of the evening to mark his fourth extra-man score of the year.
- Soucie now owns 11 points in 2018-19.
- Higgins, Plunkett and Bilek all registered assists on the night.
- Jared Dempsey made 29 saves which is the most since facing Niagara on Nov. 23.

- The Black Knights will continue their slew of road competitions next Saturday.
