Black Knights Claim Season Opener at LIU Brooklyn

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point women's basketball won its season opener on Friday night at LIU Brooklyn with a 57-42 victory on the road.
Army went on a 15-2 run to end the second quarter and never looked back for its fourth-straight season-opening victory.
Madison Hovren led the way with a double-double with a game high 20 points and 12 boards. Liz Layne collected 10 points and nine rebounds in her first career start. Jess Lewis had a steady game with six points, six rebounds and five assists for the winners.
LIU Brooklyn saw Brandy Thomas score 14 points and grab 12 rebounds, along with three blocks. Jeydah Johnson recorded 10 points and three rebounds in the loss for the Blackbirds.
Army shot 37.5 percent from the floor and was 41.7 percent from beyond the arc with five 3-pointers in the game. The Army defense defended the three well as LIU Brooklyn was 2-of-12 from distance.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights opened the season with a victory for the seventh time under head coach Dave Magarity.
- It was the fourth straight year Army has started the season with a win.
- Hovren became the ninth player in school history to register 700 career rebounds.
- Hovren added her 34th career double-double and reached 20 points for the 19th time in an Army uniform.
- Layne added career highs in both points and rebounds.
- Maddie Allen made her first career start in her opening game with the Black Knights, while Layne was in the starting five for the first time as well.
- Fifteen players saw action in tonight's game including all eight rookies that are a part of a young roster.
- Rookie Alisa Fallon finished with six points in her career debut, while classmates Maddie Allen and Kate Murray added three and two points, respectively.
- Army outrebounded LIU by a 46-32 margin and had 26 points in the paint compared to 16 for the Blackbirds. The Black Knights also led in fast break points with a 10-2 advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Army opened the game with a 10-0 run thanks to six points from Libby Tacka and four added by Hovren. Due to the run, Army held a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Black Knights gave up the early advantage with the Blackbirds evening the score at 15-15 with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
- Layne answered with a jumper from the top of key for her first two points of the season and then Lewis hit a three from the left wing and Army was back up by five just over a minute later.
- Yancey then dropped in a jumper, followed by back-to-back treys from Lewis and Yancey and Army was back in business with a 13-point lead at 28-15 with 2:37 left in the frame.
- Layne scored another jumper to make it 30-15 and then the Blackbirds' Tia Montagne closed out the scoring with a layup to close out the half with Army leading 30-17.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Black Knights held onto the double-digit advantage throughout the third quarter thanks to 10 points in the frame from Hovren and two 3-pointers from Fallon to put Army on top 49-27 with one quarter to go.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Army's front court kept scoring in the beginning of the fourth quarter with Hovren dropping a jumper and two free throws, while Layne hit a layup and a smooth shot from the foul line to give Army a 57-35 advantage with 4:55 left.
- That was all the scoring Army needed as the Black Knights earned the victory in the season opener.

- The Black Knights head down to Manhattan to take on Columbia on Monday night for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
