Second-Half Shooting Sends Columbia Past Army

NEW YORK - The Army West Point women's basketball team came up short in its second game of the season with a 70-49 loss at Columbia on Monday night at Levien Gym.
The Black Knights moved to 1-1 on the year and were led by Kate Murray, who recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Madison Hovren added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Maddie Allen chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
The Lions are 2-0 to start the year thanks to 21 points from Sienna Durr, who was 10-of-17 from the field, and registered a team-high seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams struggled shooting the ball out of the gate, but Army ended the first 10 minutes with a 6-0 run to lead 12-9. The Lions were 4-of-19 from the floor including 1-of-9 from beyond-the-arc.
- Alisa Fallon and Allen found openings along the baseline and Jess Lewis was able to find them for easy buckets.
- Murray finished the quarter by sinking an elbow jumper after flashing to the ball and Army had the three-point lead.
SECOND QUARTER
- Columbia caught fire in the second quarter and went on a stretch with seven made buckets on eight shots to help earn a 30-25 lead at the break.
- Murray and Allen kept Army within five at halftime with four points each in the second quarter. Murray had eight points at the period, while Allen had six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
- The Black Knights struggled from the free throw line, going 3-for-12 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes. Army was able to capitalize on the offensive boards with 10 second-chance points in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Lions came out in the start of the quarter and built a 37-25 advantage thanks to a 7-0 run.
- Columbia shot 60 percent from the floor in the third quarter and outscored Army 21-9, taking a 51-34 lead into the final frame.
- The Black Knights went 3-of-16 from the floor in the quarter and saw the Lions increase their edge in points in the paint to 30-14.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Columbia continued its hot shooting into the fourth quarter and was 3-of-6 from beyond-the-arc to register the 70-49 victory.
- Army was led by Hovren in the fourth quarter with seven points.
