Army Comes From Behind to Top Lafayette, 3-1

EASTON, Pa. – After dropping the opening set, the Army West Point volleyball team rebounded with three-straight set wins to take the match 3-1 over Lafayette here Friday night.Â
The Black Knights kept things close in the first set but ultimately fell, 25-21, to the home side. Army quickly found its rhythm though taking the next three games to secure its fifth conference victory of the year.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Lafayette 25, Army 21)
- The Black Knights registered 15 kills in the opening set but were unable to earn the victory.
- Allie Strong and Monica Eckford led the way with four kills each.Â
- Nikki Lum picked up nine assists and a team-best four digs during that game as well.Â
SECOND SET (Army 25, Lafayette 16)
- The Cadets rebounded for an impressive eight-point win in the second set.
- Army's .462 - .176 edge in hitting percentage over the Leopards was the difference maker.
- Courtney Horace tallied nine kills on 11 attempts for a .818 hitting percentage.Â
- Lum continued to pace the Black Knights' offense with nine assists.
THIRD SET (Army 25, Lafayette 21)
- Army kept up its momentum in the third set and battled it out to register the close victory.
- Eckford led all hitters with five kills, while Emmy Barnhorst chipped in two.Â
- Maggie Petersen hit a big service ace in a 11-11 game to ultimately hand the Black Knights the lead for good.Â
FOURTH SET (Army 25, Lafayette 14)
- Army then rolled easily to a victory in what ended up being the final set thanks to a game-high seven kills from Horace.Â
- Ana Oglivie compiled six digs, while Lum recorded a game-best nine assists.Â
- Eckford tallied five kills and helped with two blocks during the frame.Â
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Horace made her presence known with a game-high 18 kills in total, including nine in the second set alone. The junior added one dig and one block in her homecoming contest as well.Â
- Eckford chipped in 14 kills for a .737 hitting percentage on the night.
- Lum had 33 assists, while Presley added 16.
- Lum and Peterson registered Army's only two service aces.
- Oglivie was all over the floor, compiling a team-best 17 digs and seven assists.
- For the night the Black Knights hit .320 compared to Lafayette's .157 mark.Â
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lehigh for a 4 p.m. contest with the Mountain Hawks.Â
