Army Set Back Versus New Hampshire
September 14, 2017 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team closed out the non-league portion of its schedule with a 2-0 set back against New Hampshire on Thursday evening at Clinton Field.
The Black Knights dropped to 2-5-1 on the season, while UNH improved to 5-3-0 in 2017.
The Wildcats captured the first scoring chance of the night in the sixth minute when Kaylan Williams received a through ball from Francesca Picicci that sent her down the left side of the box. The shot was handled by Army's rookie goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia as she made her first of three saves in the game.
The Black Knights responded in the 25th minute as Lauryn Westman dribbled through the UNH defense and got a pulled her shot just wide of the right post.
Despite trailing 1-0 at the intermission, Army held the edge in shots (8-4) and corners (4-0).
Army continued that pressure in the second half, starting with a shot that crept over the crossbar by Samantha Sullenger. She fired a one-timer from just inside the edge of the box after a Sydney Witham free kick was deflected off a UNH defender in the 53rd minute.
Witham was involved in more of the action in the attacking third for the Cadets as she sent a pass into the left corner for Clare Shea who sent a cross in to fellow senior Madison McGinn. McGinn controlled the ball off her chest and fired a shot that was saved in the 67th minute.
The Wildcats increased their lead in the 78th minute when Picicci's sliding shot found its way to the top left corner for her second score of the night.
