Army Sweeps Terriers in Season Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Led by its senior class, the Army West Point volleyball team swept St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0, Friday night in the Black Knights' season opener. It is the first time since the 2012 season that the Cadets open the year with a 1-0 mark.

"I am very proud of the team and the coaching staff for the hard work we've all put in this preseason," said head coach Alma Kovaci Lee. "It was a great start and we are looking forward to tomorrow to continue the journey."

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- The senior class led Army in the match and kicked the night off at the Ring Ceremony to commemorate their academic careers as they enter their final year at West Point.
- Carolyn Bockrath posted a team-leading 11 kills and four blocks and hit .786 on the night.
- Amber Clay also recorded double-digit kills with 10 and added seven digs.
- Rachel Gearon notched eight kills for a .318 hitting percentage and added three block assists.
- Courtney Horace stepped off the bench to add five kills, while Jaden Pickell had four and Allie Strong notched three kills and had nine digs.
- Ana Oglivie posted double-digit digs (10) in her career debut and added a match-leading three service aces.
- Nikki Lum controlled Army's offense with 24 assists while adding six digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers jumped out to an early lead over Army in the first set, but a 7-1 run by the Black Knights helped them retake the lead 16-14.
- With St. Francis Brooklyn on its tail, Army staged a 7-2 run to clinch the first set 25-19.
- Clay recorded two kills in the stretch as Strong and Pickell joined in. Bockrath was strong at the net with a block to set Army up for set point.
- The second set was all about the Black Knights who sprinted to a 6-0 lead with Lum on the serve. Army doubled up the Terriers score (20-10) and then went on a 5-2 run to take the second set. Horace, Gearon and Bockrath all recorded kills to push Army up 2-0 in the match.
- The third set highlighted Army's powerful and upbeat offense as the team went from a 13-10 lead to a 25-11 lead to clinch the season opener.
- The Black Knights' 12-1 run featured kills from Clay, Horace, Pickell and Monica Eckford, but the shining moments were the three service aces by Oglivie.
TURNING POINT
- Army's 12-1 run to close-out the final set and win the match helped them to a 1-0 start to the season for the first time since the 2012 season.
UP NEXT
- Army will host Central Michigan (12 p.m.) and Hartford (7 p.m.) on Saturday at Gillis Field House.
