Army Battles to Scoreless Draw at UMass Lowell

Lowell, Mass. – The Army West Point women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw Sunday evening at UMass Lowell.
The Black Knights moved to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Riverhawks are now 0-0-1.
Both sides were able to generate some looks offensively in the first half, but neither were able to turn them into chances until the final minute. Rookie Lizzie Harper provided Army with its first scoring chance of the evening in the 45th minute, firing a shot that forced UML goalkeeper Julia Schneider to make the difficult stop.
Army was able to outshoot UMass Lowell 6-2 in the opening frame before compiling a 9-4 advantage in the second half. Two of the best scoring chances in the game came from the Cadets in the final 45 minutes of regulation by Erynn Johns and Clare Shea.
Johns' opportunity came in the 61st minute on a header from a set piece that forced Schneider to hold the ball outside of the net after making the initial save. Less than five minutes later, Shea found herself with the ball from 15 yards out and drilled her shot off the post.
UMass Lowell generated the only two shots in extra time, both in the first overtime period.

- This was the first-ever meeting between Army and UMass Lowell.
- Army has started the season undefeated through its first two matches for the first time since 2008. This is also the first time that the Black Knights have not allowed a goal in their first two contests since 1996.
- The Black Knights outshot the Riverhawks 15-8 in the game and 8-1 in shots on goal.
- Rookie keeper Sydney Cassalia posted her second shutout in as many appearances, needing to make just one save in the 99th minute.
- Clare Shea recorded a game-high four shots, while Erynn Johns had the most on target with three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army contained nearly every attack from UMass Lowell throughout the game, stifling any threats with excellent play from the back line.
- The Black Knights were able to get many looks throughout the game, although they were unable to convert on their scoring chances.

- The Black Knights return to Clinton Field on Thursday against Syracuse with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
