Army Closes Out Season in Patriot League Semifinals
May 13, 2017 | Baseball
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon to Holy Cross in the Patriot League tournament semifinals.
The Cadets fell 8-2 in the opener, before losing a heartbreaker in the nightcap, 5-4. Army held a 4-1 advantage heading into the eighth inning of Game 2 but the Crusaders pushed across four huge runs in that frame to ultimately secure the come-from-behind victory.
The Black Knights tried to rally in the bottom half of the eighth and even loaded with bases with two outs but weren't able to record the needed hit to bring home the tying run.
Tyler Giovinco earned the starting nod for Army in that contest with his only blemish a leadoff home run by Bill Schlich in top of the sixth. The sophomore pitched six inning, allowing six hits and one run in his final outing of the year.
In Game 1, the home team jumped in front early after a two-out three-run homer to left field. The Crusaders tacked on one additional run in the second before scoring three in the fourth to create a 7-0 gap between the teams. One more run came home for Holy Cross when Anthony Critelli hit a home run to left center in the seventh inning.
Army sparked a small rally in the eighth when Trey Martin led off with his fourth long ball of the year to cut into the deficit. Senor Kris Lindner then singled in fellow classmate David Monge to make it a 8-2 ballgame. Unfortunately, that would be all the Cadets would get as the Crusaders held on for the win.
Jacob Hurtubise finished 3-for-8 on the day, while five other Black Knights posted two hits each.
Jon Rosoff saw his on-base streak halted in Game 1. The junior finished reaching base safely in 12 consecutive games leading up to Saturday's opener.
Lindner, Monge, Alex Dickerson, Baggio Saldivar and Jeremy Mortensen all wrapped up their Army careers following the games.
