Army Bats Come Alive in 14-6 Victory
May 03, 2017 | Baseball
The Black Knights jumped in front early following a one-out Jon Rosoff home run in the opening frame. The Cadets added another run a few plays later when Alex Dickerson and John McCarthy teamed up for a well-executed hit-and-run.
The visitors took over a 3-2 lead in the second inning after scoring three runs on two hits. The Blackbirds tacked on their fourth run of the game in the third, following a leadoff home run by Joe Mercadante.
Army then registered a big seven-run fourth inning to break the game open at 9-4. Baggio Saldivar ledoff that frame with his first long ball of the year over the left field fence. That hit sparked three-straight singles by the Black Knights before the Blackbirds were finally able to tally their first out of the inning. The Cadets earned three more hits, including doubles from Rosoff and Saldivar, to finish with seven hits.
LIU Brooklyn would not go away though scoring two runs back on three hits in the fifth inning to make it a 9-6 ballgame.
After a clean sixth and seventh frame by both teams, Army added on with five additional runs in the eighth to ultimately put the game out of reach. The Cadets notched six hits in that inning alone to close out their night with 18 overall.
Rosoff and Saldivar were both one triple away from the "cycle" after posting a single, double and home run in the contest.
Rosoff finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, three runs and a walk. Saldivar recorded three hits, three RBI and two runs during his five at bats. David Monge also tallied three hits, while recording an RBI and a run.
Cam Opp (4-2) earned the win in the circle for Army, after pitching 4.1 innings of relief work. The sophomore allowed four hits, two runs and two walks during his time on the hill. Sam Messina then came in the close out the final 1.2 innings, posting nearly a clean sheet minus a leadoff walk in the ninth. Opp and Messina both registered four strikeouts each.
