Hudgins Delivers Timely Hit To Spark DH Split
April 29, 2017 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point baseball team split a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Lehigh.
The Cadets rebounded from a tough 5-4 seven-inning loss in Game 1 to take a thrilling 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The come-from-behind victory in Game 2 was critical for the Black Knights as they now only need 1-of-2 wins during tomorrow's twin bill to make the Patriot League tournament.
Matt Hudgins was the man of the game, driving in Army's final two runs with a two-out double in the top of the ninth to ultimately secure the win. Sam Messina then closed things out with a clean sheet in the bottom half by striking out the side for his first win of the season.
Army started the nightcap taking the early 1-0 edge after Kris Lindner doubled home Jacob Hurtubise. The Mountain Hawks quickly answered in the second though with three big runs to pull in front 3-1. The score remained the same until Hurtubise broke through in the seventh with a one-out single. His hit drove home David Monge, who had lead off the inning with a single.
The Black Knights then tacked on two more runs in the ninth for their 22nd victory of the year.
In the opener, the Cadets broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fourth when John McCarthy's single to right field scored Jon Rosoff from second.
The home team answered in the bottom half with two runs, but the Black Knights would not go away. They knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth when Lindner singled to second base, which allowed Josh White enough time to touch home. Unfortunately, Lehigh tallied two additional runs in the bottom half of the fifth to create a 4-2 gap between the teams.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth to keep things close heading into the final frame of the contest. Army tried to rally and even saw Hudgins blast his team-leading sixth long ball of the year in the top of the seventh but the deficit proved to be too much.
Monge, Hurtubise, Rosoff and Hudgins all registered three hits each on the day. Hudgins accumulated three RBI, while Lindner posted two. Hurtubise accounted for two of Army's runs on the day as well.
Jacob Carte was tabbed with the loss in the opener. The sophomore pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, two of which were earned during his time on the mound.
Tyler Giovinco kept the Black Knights in Game 2, pitching the opening 5.1 innings. The Las Vegas, Nev., native gave up seven hits and three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out three.
