Big Second Inning Sparks Blacks Knights Victory
April 18, 2017 | Baseball
The big inning was highlighted by a triple from Josh White, a double from Matt Hudgins and home runs off the bats of Jon Rosoff and Alex Dickerson. Those two long balls marked the first time since April 27, 2013 in which two Cadets blasted home runs in the same inning. Michael Sands and Alex Jensen were the ones who last did so for the Black Knights four years ago.
Army's nine runs in the second frame were no surprise either as the Cadets exploded for eight runs in the second inning of their 9-4 victory at Siena just six days ago.
In Tuesday's action, both teams notched runs in the opening inning, with the visitors holding the slim 2-1 edge. The lead quickly faded though following Army's nine runs in the second inning. The Black Knights posted eight of their final 14 hits during that frame.
The Cadets brought home one more run in the third after John McCarthy hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to make it an 11-2 ballgame.
The Great Danes would not go away though outscoring their host 8-2 over the course of the next five innings to make things interesting heading into the ninth.
Logan Smith, who had come in to get the final out of the eighth, allowed a single to begin the inning before walking Albany's leadoff man Kevin Donati to place the tying run at the plate. The rookie then rebounded to register a huge strikeout for the first out. On the ensuing play, Smith forced Evan Harasta to hit into a double play to end the game.
Rosoff had a solid performance, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Kris Lindner, Trey Martin, Hudgins and Dickerson all chipped in two hits each, while Dickerson accounted for three RBI.
Cam Opp earned the win on the hill after pitching a predetermined opening three innings. He allowed three hits and two unearned runs while on the mound. Smith closed out the final 1.1 innings giving up just one hit to notch his first career save.
