Army Heads to Bucknell for EIWA Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team kicks off its postseason at the 113th edition of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, hosted by Bucknell, on Friday and Saturday.

ARMY (7-5, 5-3 EIWA)
• Last time out, the Black Knights took the Gold Star from service-academy rival Navy, 19-14, at Chrisl Arena on Feb. 19.
• The win allowed head coach Kevin Ward to become the first coach in program history to defeat Navy in two out of his first three attempts and the second with multiple wins over the Midshipmen.
• Army completed its first winning season under Ward's direction with seven victories, five of which came against EIWA opponents.
• Senior co-captain Russ Parsons is second on the team with 23 wins in his farewell campaign, with 12 bonus-point victories (one fall, six technical falls and five major decisions).
• Rookie 174-pounder Ben Harvey was the only Cadet to wrestle in every dual this season, posting a record of 5-7.
ARMY AT THE EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS
• Thirty-one Cadets have been crowned as an EIWA Champion, with the latest being Matt Kyler at 149 pounds in the 2010 tournament.
• Army has four current grapplers who have placed at the tournament: Parsons, who was fifth at 157 lbs. in 2015 and fourth in 2016; Matt Kelly, who was eighth at 149 lbs. last season; Mendel, who placed fifth at 165 lbs. in 2016; and Imonode, who was fifth at 184 lbs.
• The Black Knights are pursuing their second team crown in program history, with the first coming in 1987. The '87 squad placed all 10 wrestlers with Todd Messitt, who acts as Army's current head officer representative, earning the 126-pound title.
• In 2016, Army sent six wrestlers to podium finishes, the most since 2013.
