Late Rally Lifts Colgate Past Army

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's basketball team saw Colgate rally in the final five minutes to take a 70-58 victory here Wednesday night.

The Black Knights had battled back to within 55-54 with 4:34 remaining after being down 13 just five minutes into the second half.

But Colgate answered with seven straight before eventually pulling away down the stretch for the 12-point victory.

Tommy Funk led the way for Army with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. He also converted on one of his two attempts from 3-point range.

Matt Wilson was the only other Cadet in double digits, finishing with 12 points after going 4-of-6 from the floor. The rookie went 4-for-4 at the free throw line as well.

Wilson closed out his night with a team-best seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. Jacob Kessler chipped in five boards, while John Emezie matched his career-high with four assists.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights finished shooting 42 percent (21-of-50) from the floor and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from long range. The Cadets also converted on 10 of their 13 attempts at the charity stripe for 76.9 percent shooting.
- Colgate shot 43.2 percent (19-of-44), 47.6 percent (10-of-21), and 78.6 percent (22-of-28), respectively.
- The Raiders outrebounded Army 30-27 with both teams pulling down seven offensive boards.
- Army scored 30 points from inside the paint to Colgate's 16 but the Raiders' held the 23-11 edge on points off turnovers.
- The Raiders also tallied nine second-chance points to the Black Knights' four, while having a 6-0 edge on fast break points as well.
- Army's bench outscored its host though 27-2.
- Jordan Fox and Emezie added nine and eight points, respectively. Fox went 3-of-7 from the floor, 2-of-4 from downtown and 1-for-1 at the line. Emezie finished 3-of-9 from the floor, 1-of-4 from behind-the-arc and 1-of-4 at the charity stripe.
- Gunther Klimes earned a career-high 20 minutes and scoring his first collegiate bucket at the 14:10 mark of the opening period. The rookie also pulled down a career-best three rebounds, while chipping in two assists, one block and one steal.
- Army led for 24 seconds. Colgate was in front for 38:41. The game was tied for 55 seconds.
- Colgate found three in twin figures with Will Rayman's game-high 28 points leading the way. The rookie finished 9-of-14 from the floor, an impressive 4-of-5 from long range and 6-for-9 at the free throw line. He also added seven rebounds and three steals.
TURNING POINT
- Colgate extended its lead to a game-high 13 points at 40-27 with 15:08 remaining in the contest. Army wouldn't go away though, cutting the deficit down to 55-54 after using a 27-15 run over a little more than 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the Raiders responded with seven straight to ultimately secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The hosts started the game on a 10-0 run, forcing Army to call a timeout early.
- The Black Knights rallied though using a 14-3 run to pull in front at 14-13 with 9:05 remaining in the game.
- Colgate responded with nine-straight points to break the game back open at 22-14 with six minutes left before halftime. Seven of those nine points came from the hands of Jordan Swopshire.
- Army whittled the deficit back down to 28-25 a few minutes later but a late 3-pointer from Rayman with 26 seconds left handed the home team a 31-25 lead at the break.
- The Raiders continue that pressure and extended their edge to a game-high 40-27 after starting the second half on a 9-2 run.
- The Cadets would not go away though chipping away at the margin and pulling within 55-54 with 4:34 left on the clock.
- But that's when Colgate used a 7-0 run to increase its lead back to eight points before converting on all six of their attempts at the free throw line late down the stretch.

- The Cadets welcome American to Christl Arena on Saturday at 3 p.m. That game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network with Rich DeMarco on the call. The Eagles are coming off a 67-64 home loss to Boston University on Wednesday. American sits with a 5-19 overall record to go along with its 2-11 conference mark.
