WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer program held its annual awards banquet late last month.
Army went 9-8-2 overall in 2016 and finished with a 4-4-1 record in Patriot League action. The Black Knights defeated Navy for the second year in a row and also topped Air Force in the season opener. The 2016 campaign was the first that Army defeated both service academies in the same season since 2007.
Head coach Russell Payne and his staff handed out awards to individuals based on their performances during the 2016 season.
The Col. John McHugh Selfless Service Award was presented to juniors Christian Nolasco and Denys Villatoro. Nolasco played in seven games, while earning five starts in net. He posted a 3-2-1 record, and helped the Black Knights to wins over Air Force, Siena and Fairleigh Dickinson. A defender, Villatoro appeared in all 19 matches this past season, including 18 starts.
All-Patriot League first team honoree, Zac McGraw was honored as Army's Newcomer of the Year after starting all 19 games at the center back position. He finished the year with one goal and four assists, including a goal and an assist during a 2-1 win over Colgate on Oct. 26.
Senior defender Tanner Vosvick collected the Major General Austin S. Miller Leadership Award after serving as a co-captain alongside Nick Williams. Vosvick started in 13 of the 15 games he appeared in and battled back from an early-season injury to help Army reach the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth year in a row. Vosvick had two assists on the season and was named to the All-Patriot League third team.
Freshman goalie Justin Stoll was presented with Defensive Player of the Year accolades, following a strong debut season in net for the Black Knights. Stoll appeared in 15 games, and started 14 times, while posting a 6-6-1 overall record and four shutouts.
The Francis "Scotty" Adams Offensive Player of the Year award was given to freshman forward Rex Epps for leading the Cadets with 11 goals and 22 points. His 11 goals on the year tied for the most in the Patriot League this season, and are the most by an Army men's soccer player since John Brence (USMA '91) scored 12 goals in 1988. Epps was named to the All-Patriot League third team, and received additional postseason accolades with mention on the College Soccer News All-Freshman Team and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region Team.
Williams was honored with the Joe Casey Most Valuable Player award, after netting six goals and adding a pair of assists last season. A team co-captain, Williams started in all 19 of Army's matches and led Black Knight forwards with playing nearly 83 minutes per game.
