Rifle Finishes Fifth at GARC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Army West Point rifle team's hopes of finishing among the leaders following its second-place showing in smallbore (2311) the opening day of the Great America Rifle Conference Championships fell shy in placing fifth with a 4649 aggregate after firing a 2338 score in air rifle the final day.
West Virginia defended its title with a 4725 aggregate after sweeping the team titles in both smallbore and air rifle. Nebraska was second (4679), Kentucky third (4667) followed by North Carolina State (4660) in rounding out the top four among the field of nine teams.
Yearling Nathan Brewer and plebe Madeline Erikson led Army in air rifle as both posted scores of 585 to tie for 27th among the field of 78 shooters. Firsties Marvin Lewis and Danielle Cuomo rounded out the Black Knights' scoring team with identical 584s as Army posted a team score of 2338 to tie with Ole Miss for sixth place in that discipline.
West Virginia captured the team title in air rifle the final day behind a 2384 followed by Nebraska (2376), Â Kentucky (2361) and North Carolina State (2356) in rounding out the top half of the standings.
Brewer has one more meet this season having qualified for the NCAA championships next month where he will be competing individually in air rifle. Last year he had qualified in smallbore.
