AIC’s Overtime Goal Lifts it Past Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team fell to AIC, 3-2, Saturday night after the Yellow Jackets netted the game-winner with 3:48 left in overtime.
Prior to the night's game, the Black Knights honored Clint Carlisle, Parker Gahagen, Ryan Nick, Garret Peterson and C.J. Reuschlein for senior night.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Although it did not gain points in tonight's game, Army secured third in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament with help from Sacred Heart who defeated Air Force 3-2.
- Taylor Maruya tallied Army's lone goal in the first period. It was just his second of the season and 13th point of the year.
- Cole Bruns made 19 saves in his second game of the 2016-17 season.
- Maruya led the Cadets with six shots on the night, while Zach Evancho and Reuschlein added four apiece.
- The Black Knights held a 35-21 advantage in shots over the Yellow Jackets and led in faceoffs 33-22.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Yellow Jackets took a point-blank shot four minutes into the game, but Bruns made a diving glove save to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
- Three minutes later, Peterson took a slap shot from the right circle, but Zackarias Skog was there to make the stop.
- Maruya netted Army's first of the game at the 7:28 mark of the first frame. He blocked a shot by Johno May and carried it up the ice to score top shelf.
- Conor Andrle went on a breakaway with eight minutes left in the second stanza, but Skog flashed his glove to maintain the 1-0 score.
- The Black Knights had a 5-on-3 opportunity in the third frame, but could not convert. Maruya, Trevor Fidler and Ian Mansfield all recorded shots during the man-up advantage.
- On a fluke play, AIC's Joel Kocur was 1-on-1 with Bruns during and Army power play. Bruns stuffed Kocur's shot which kept the Black Knights ahead 1-0.
- The Yellow Jackets evened the score with 4:06 remaining in regulation. Nicolas Luka netted the equalizer with the assist from Johno May.
- With just over a minute into the extra time, AIC scored the game-winner with a bar down shot by Janis Jaks. This gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 lead in the sudden-victory overtime.
UP NEXT
- Army will be off next weekend due to its first round bye in the AHA Tournament. The Black Knights return to Tate Rink Mar. 10-12 for the second round against an opponent that will be announced next week.
